Dinajpur Railway Assistant Executive Engineer (A.E.N) Narayan Prasad Sarkar has been accused of laying off workers and irregularities. In the wake of this allegation, a worker named Md. Shahidul Islam, frustrated after losing his job, went to the A.E.N office on Friday (February 21, 2025) and attempted suicide.
Md. Shahidul Islam is the son of the deceased Sultan Ali of Majhadba village, ward no. 7, Pamuli union no. 4, Panchagarh district.
Witnesses said that around 12 noon on Friday, Shahidul Islam tried to set himself on fire inside the A.E.N office by pouring petrol on himself. However, the office staff quickly stopped him. Md. Shahidul Islam alleged that he was unfairly dismissed on February 19, 2024. I have been living in hardship without a job for the past 13 months. AEN Narayan Prasad is laying off and hiring workers illegally. I could not bear it anymore and tried to commit suicide.
In this regard, AEN Narayan Prasad said that during the incident, the office staff stopped him and poured water on him to calm him down. He also said that there were allegations of moral and disciplinary violations against Shahidul, so I dismissed him.
According to the Bangladesh Railway Act, Dinajpur AEN requires the approval of higher authorities to take any decision. But there are allegations that he has decided to lay off workers unilaterally, ignoring this rule.
Although senior railway officials were contacted for comments on this matter, no response was received.
