Md. Zillur Rahman Jewel: Based on a tip-off, a woman named Tapasi Rani (40) was arrested along with 26 turtles from the road adjacent to Suhari Bridge in Patuakhali on Wednesday (December 18) morning.
According to sources from the Galachipa Forest Department, Tapasi Rani has been involved in the turtle smuggling ring for a long time. On Wednesday morning, she was traveling to Khulna on a motorcycle with 26 turtles inside a trouble bag.
The rescued turtles include 9 loggerhead turtles and 17 loggerhead turtles, which are known to be protected species.
The arrested woman’s home is in Baherchar village of Rangabali upazila.
Later, the Wildlife Conservation Act Mobile Court. According to the 2012 Penal Code, the punishment is one year in prison and a fine of one thousand taka.
The mobile court was run by Assistant Commissioner Land and Executive Magistrate Md. Nasim Reza. He also said that the operation will continue to prevent such smuggling rings. Later, the rescued turtles were released into the Ramnabad River with the assistance of forest guard Naeem.
