Wife sentenced to life imprisonment for killing husband

The court ordered life imprisonment and a fine of Tk 20,000 to the wife Sahida Begum (57) in the case of beating her husband to death with an iron rod in Rajbari.

On Wednesday (February 28), Rajbari District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Mosa Zakia Sultana gave the verdict. Accused Sahida Begum was present in the court during the pronouncement of the verdict.

On December 4, 2012, the accused’s elder daughter Afroza Begum filed a murder case against her mother Sahida Begum at Baliakandi police station in Rajbari.

According to the affidavit and court sources, the house of accused Sahida Begum’s husband Ashraf was in Okapur village of Kalaroa police station of Satkhira district. He married Sahida Begum and bought land in Bangkur village of Baliakandi upazila of Rajbari. After settling here, he got married again at Kalroa in Satkhira district. After his second marriage, Ashraf stopped paying the family expenses of his first wife Sahida Begum. Sometimes Ashraf came from Satkhira and beat up his first wife Sahida for money. He threatened to sell the house if he could not pay. On the day of the incident, on December 4, 2012, at around 7.40 in the morning, Ashraf started quarreling for money, saying that he was going to sell it. At one point, Ashraf brought an iron rod from the house and went to beat his wife Sahida Begum. Then Sahida Begum took the iron rod from Ashraf and hit him on the head. After eating Rod’s house, Ashraf screamed and fell into the field next to the house. Then Sahida Begum went and hit Ashraf on the head with a rod. Ashraf died on the spot. Later Sahida Begum’s elder daughter Afroza Begum filed a case at Baliakandi police station as the plaintiff. After the case, Sahida Begum was arrested by the police and sent to the court. Sahida Begum was on bail after serving 9 months of imprisonment till the day of judgment. She was present in the court during the verdict and then the court ordered to send Sahida Begum to jail.

Rajbari Judge Court Public Advocate Adv. Wazir Ali said, “The court while delivering the verdict said that Sahida Begum was sentenced to death for the crime she committed. But considering the age of the accused, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of 20,000 taka. I am happy with this verdict.’
