International Desk: Bangladesh has called for ensuring ‘complete security’ for India’s Muslim minority. However, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has called the call unnecessary and showy.
On Thursday (April 17), the press secretary of Bangladesh’s chief adviser, Shafiqul Alam, said, “We urge the Indian government and the West Bengal government to take all necessary steps to ensure complete security of the minority Muslim community.”
Shafiqul Alam also mentioned that the Bangladesh government condemns the attacks on Muslims and the loss of their lives and property.
In response, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We completely reject Bangladesh’s comments on the West Bengal incident. This is an attempt to compare it with India’s concerns about minorities in Bangladesh.”
Last week, violence broke out in Muslim-dominated Murshidabad district during protests over the new Waqf law. The protests spread to Malda, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts, where incidents of arson, brick-pelting and road blockades took place.
