The Election Commission (EC) is starting to update the voter list by going door to door after three years. The process will continue from Monday (January 20) until February 3. This time, the information of those born on or before January 1, 2008 will be collected. Senior Assistant Secretary of the EC’s Election Support Branch Md. Nasir Uddin Chowdhury said that once the information collection work is completed, the work of taking photos and completing the registration will start from February 5. The registration process will continue until April 11. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin said that the registration process will be completed within the next six months. 65,000 people will be engaged in the entire process. They will work with the target of adding 1.52 percent of citizens to the voter list.
Meanwhile, the last phase of updating the data collected for the three years in 2022 is underway. About 1.8 million voters can be added in March. According to the latest update, the number of voters in the country is 121.850.160. Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah said that 40 to 45 lakh voters may be included in the update process. We are updating the information house by house to ensure that there are no duplicate voters in the list, that dead voters are excluded and that new voters are included in the list to prepare an accurate voter list.
After the preparation of the voter list with photo in 2007-2008, the voter list has been updated six times before. The EC conducted door-to-door updating activities in 2009-2010, 2012-2013, 2015-2016, 2017-2018, 2019-2020 and 2022-2023. The documents that information collectors need to provide to become new voters in the voter list update: a) Copy of 17-digit online birth certificate b) Copy of nationality/citizenship certificate c) Photocopy of NID of close relatives (parents, siblings, etc.) d) Copy of SSC/Dakhil/equivalent, 8th class pass certificate (if applicable) e) Copy of utility bill (photocopy of electricity, gas, water/chowkidari receipt). Things to be careful about while becoming a voter: a) Your name, parents’ names, birth registration or education certificate must be written exactly as per the birth registration or education certificate b) Date of birth must be as per the birth registration or education certificate c) When writing permanent address, The voter’s actual permanent address must be written d) Under no circumstances should one be a double or double voter. In a press release, the EC said that being a multiple voter is a punishable offense. If someone is a multiple voter, it can be easily identified through fingerprint testing.
