Youth is playing an important role in providing village court services to women and marginalized communities. With the active participation of local youth, the village court activities of the Union Parishad can be made more effective. As a result of this initiative, various disputes and conflicts can be easily resolved locally.

On 12 December 2024, a youth workshop titled “Village Court Gender Champion” was held at the conference room of the Dinajpur Deputy Commissioner. The workshop was presided over by Mohammad Noor-e-Alam, Deputy Director (Additional Responsibilities), Local Government Branch, Dinajpur. The chief guest was Dinajpur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md. Rafiqul Islam.

Also present at the event were Farhana Ferdousi Shiuli, Assistant Commissioner (Local Government Branch), Deputy Directors of the Directorate of Youth Development and the Directorate of Women Affairs, Suman Francis Gomez (Communication and Outreach Analyst, UNDP), Shamima Akhter Shammi (Gender Analyst), and Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique (District Manager, Bangladesh Village Court Activation Project).

The main objective of the “Village Court Gender Champion” workshop was to make youth representatives aware of the activities of the village courts and through them to further encourage the village people in this regard. The participants were enthusiastic about spreading the word about the activities of the village courts in their respective families, areas and educational institutions.

In his opening speech, Deputy Commissioner Md. Rafiqul Islam said, “Local people, especially women and marginalized communities, can get judicial services through the village courts in an easy, low-cost and transparent manner. The youth can play a big role in this process.”

Youth representatives who participated in the workshop said that they got a deep understanding of village court services and judicial activities through this workshop. They will now be able to motivate the villagers to go to the village courts and resolve disputes.

The Village Court Activation (Phase 3) project in Bangladesh is being implemented with joint funding from local governments, UNDP and the European Union. The project is operating in 4,453 union parishads in 468 upazilas of 61 districts.
