Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Masud and Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. SK Shariful Alam have resigned in the face of student protests.
They sent their resignation letters to the Ministry of Education on Wednesday (April 23) night. An official from the Scholarship and Engineering Branch of the Ministry’s Secondary and Higher Education Department confirmed this information to without disclosing his name.
He said that when the issue was not resolved despite all the steps taken by the government, the Ministry requested the Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor to consider the matter. After that, they sent their resignation letters.
The official said that as per the rules, the resignation letter will be sent to the President’s Office. If he accepts the resignation letter, it will be effective.
Earlier, at around 1 am on Wednesday, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Md. The notification sent by Mamun Aur Rashid said that in order to resolve the crisis that has arisen in the wake of recent events at KUET and to quickly resume educational activities, the process of relieving the vice-chancellor and deputy vice-chancellor of the university has been initiated. A search committee will be formed immediately to make new appointments to these two positions.
It also said that in the interest of continuing the regular activities of the university during this time, one of the senior professors will be given the responsibility of the vice-chancellor temporarily. This information has been given by the Ministry of Education.
More than fifty people were injured in a bloody clash between students and locals at KUET on February 18 due to a dispute over the demand to ban student politics. After this incident, an indefinite closure of academic activities and residential halls was announced in a syndicate meeting on February 25. Ignoring the ban of the authorities, the students entered the KUET campus, which was closed on April 13.
Then, at the university’s 101st emergency syndicate meeting held on the night of April 14, the university authorities temporarily expelled 37 students in connection with the violence at KUET on February 18 and 19.
In these incidents, 29 students have been protesting since 4 pm on April 22 demanding the removal of KUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Masud.
