A high-level delegation, led by United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative Stefan Liller, met with Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser on Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Water Resources, at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday.
The meeting discussed several important issues related to recent environmental and climate change in Bangladesh. Among the key topics discussed between the Government of Bangladesh and UNDP were Sustainable Environmental Management, Climate Resilience, Adaptation to Climate Change, Ecosystem Based Management in Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ECA), Local Based Management in Haor Region, Sustainable Energy, Low-Carbon Urban Development, Climate resilient lifestyles, sustainable land management to address climate change risks and reduction of harmful chemicals.
Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan highlighted the importance of continuous partnerships and innovative solutions to address Bangladesh’s environmental challenges. He also said that it is necessary to explore new cooperation opportunities and strengthen ongoing initiatives to advance environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Resident Representative Leeler reiterated UNDP’s commitment to helping Bangladesh achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly addressing climate change and conserving natural resources.
Earlier, a French delegation led by French Ambassador Marie Masdupoui met Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hassan. The main topics of their discussion were forest conservation, transboundary air pollution, river pollution, ecosystem conservation, industrial pollution, conservation of hilly areas and protection of Sundarbans, Sal forests and Chittagong Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). The meeting discussed urgent implementation of ban on polythene shopping bags, climate action cooperation, implementation of National Adaptation Plan (NAP), coastal forestry and adaptation agreement.
After the meeting, Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hassan briefed the media and answered their various questions.
