Two sides clashed over not naming banner of platinum jubilee celebrations

The incident took place in the Platinum Jubilee celebration organized by Ghazaria Upazila Awami League at Anarpura playground of Bhaberchar Union of Ghazaria Upazila at 5.30 pm on Sunday 23rd June’24.

Upazila Awami League president Amirul Islam sided with the former dispute and not giving names in the banner. The clash took place between the people of Mazharul Haque Tapan and the supporters of Upazila Awami League General Secretary and Upazila Chairman Mansoor Ahmed Khan Jinnah.

The injured are local journalist Solaiman Shikder (32) and Upazila Awami League general secretary Mansoor Ahmed Khan Jinnah supporter Mohammad Hossain (22).

General Secretary of Ghazaria Upazila Awami League and Chairman of Ghazaria Upazila Parishad Md. Mansoor Ahmad Khan Jinnah attended the event as the chief guest, President of Munshiganj District Awami League and Chairman of District Council Mohiuddin Ahmed Munshiganj District Awami League Joint General Secretary Advocate Sohana Tahmina was present as a special guest and Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Munshiganj-Gazaria 3) Haji Mohammad Faisal Biplab (MP) was present as the main speaker. Upazila Awami League senior vice-president and two-time elected Upazila Parishad Chairman Refayet Ullah Khan Tota along with Awami League leaders and activists were also present.

Meanwhile, there was a fight between both sides and half a hundred chairs were vandalized. Later the situation calmed down with the intervention of the police and Member of Parliament Haji Mohammad Faisal Biplab MP.

When Ghazaria Upazila Parishad Chairman and Upazila Awami League General Secretary Mansoor Ahmed Khan Jinnah was asked about the unexpected incident, he said, “Dr. Mazharul Haque Tapan cannot directly engage in party politics according to government service rules. He claimed himself as the joint general secretary of the district Awami League everywhere, but actually the president of the district Awami League did not give him any letter making him the joint general secretary. So as per rules his name was not given on the banner. So he and his supporters got excited and caused this unwanted clash.

It was not possible to contact Professor Dr. Mazharul Haque Tapan for his statement. Ghazaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rajib Khan said, ‘Our members were deployed at the meeting place. But suddenly there is a commotion. Police quickly brought the situation under control. Later the program was completed well.
