Two fishermen sentenced to prison for hunting mother hilsa in Jhalkathi

Two fishermen were sentenced to one year imprisonment for the crime of hunting hilsa in Sugandha river in Jhalkathi Nalchiti upazila. On Monday (October 16) around 2 o’clock in the morning, they were sentenced to imprisonment for disobeying the ban and throwing nets in the river.

Nalchiti police officer-in-charge (OC) Muhammad Ataur Rahman confirmed this information. Nalchiti upazila executive officer (UNO) Md. Nazrul Islam ordered this imprisonment.

The two sentenced fishermen are Liton Howladar (27), son of deceased Barek Howladar of Ishwarkathi area of Nalchiti Upazila and Shubo (23), son of Abdus Salam of Shibpur area of Rangpur.

OC Muhammad Ataur Rahman said that two fishermen were arrested by conducting an operation from Sugandha river. Later they were handed over to the mobile court. Two fishermen have been sentenced to one year imprisonment by a mobile court.

Nalchiti Upazila Fisheries Officer Romni Kant Mistry said that the two fishermen were staying with boats in Baharampur area of Sugandha river. At this time they were arrested.

District Fisheries Officer Ripon Kanti Ghosh said, the first two people have been sentenced to prison in Jhalkathi district. Our operation is continuing.

UNO Md. Nazrul Islam said, after the ban, the two fishermen have been sentenced to one year imprisonment under the Fisheries Conservation Act through the traveling court for fishing with prohibited nets. Legal action will be taken against anyone who violates the ban during the operation in Nalchiti.
