Angry students and the public attacked and vandalized the house of Amu, a member of the Awami League’s Advisory Council and former MP for Jhalakathi-2 constituency.
The incident took place on Thursday (February 6) afternoon at the burnt and abandoned house of Amur on Ronalse Road in Jhalokati town. Earlier, on Wednesday around 2 am, a bulldozer started vandalizing a house on Bogra Road in Barisal city. After the vandalism, the mob set the house on fire around 3 am.
Eyewitnesses said that on Thursday morning, former MP Amir Hossain Amur vandalized Begum Firoza Amir Homeopathy Medical College in front of the Jhalokati Shilpakala Academy, and activists of the anti-discrimination student movement later came to his burnt residence and started vandalizing it.
Sheikh Hasina left the country after the Awami League government was toppled in a student uprising on August 5. An angry mob then attacked and set fire to Amur’s house in Jhalakathi. The army and police later recovered about 40 million taka and foreign currency from the house, both burned and undamaged.
Khaled Saifullah, a student of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said, “We are holding this movement to demand justice for the July massacre.”
Sadar Police Station OC Moniruzzaman said, “We haven’t found out anything yet, we are investigating the matter.”
