“There is no opportunity to stop pace of development” – Minister of Local Government

Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Tajul Islam MP said, air pollution is not only limited to our own geographical boundaries. Even if we de-pollute our own geographical boundaries, our air will not be de-polluted. Because the way wars are going on all over the world, the constant pollution is having a negative impact on our environment in various ways. Yet our indoor pollution rates are high. There is no room to disagree on this. Our country is very densely populated. In the beginning our finances were weak. To bring development into the mainstream, we had to industrialize, industrial plants were built. There is no stopping this pace of development.

The minister also said that the industrialized countries have had a negative impact on the environment by excessive industrialization without any accountability. The developed countries have polluted the whole world and created their better conditions. Now they are realizing it as a result of their industrializationĀ  The negative impact on the environment must be addressed.

He said this to Sudhibrind present during the chief guest’s speech at the workshop on multi-stakeholder consultation on air pollution control at Hotel Sonargaon Grand Ballroom today (Thursday).

Md. Tajul Islam said that we are all working for the dream of building a developed and smart Bangladesh by 2041. Modern technology is being used in agriculture, 100% electrification has been achieved, modern technology and communication system are improving tremendously.

Mentioning the importance of prevention of environment and air pollution with the speed of development, the minister also said that there are various laws and regulations for this. Proper use and implementation of these laws is very important. We must remember that if air pollution is not curbed we will all suffer. Awareness should be created for this. We will go a long way in curbing air pollution if we ensure proper implementation of the law by creating public awareness at every level of the state by following the law properly.

Finally, he called on the Ministry as well as the participants to take initiatives at the personal level to control the air pollution and expressed sincere thanks to the local government department and the World Bank that organized the workshop.

Organized by the Local Government Department’s Improvement of Urban Public Health Preventive Services (IUPHPS) project, the workshop was presided over by the Secretary of the Local Government Department, Muhammad Ibrahim. He was also present as an honored guestĀ  Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Md. Rezaul Karim, Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Dr. Selina Hyatt Ivy, Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Zayeda Khatun and many others.
