Md. Nur Islam Nayan, Dinajpur Correspondent : A common man sitting on Dinajpur Railway Station Road, Md. Mominul Islam (age 50), is a beggar by profession. But his life story is not ordinary. He has been buying and reading two newspapers every day for 8 to 9 years from his meager earnings. This is not just his habit, but a reflection of his deep love for knowledge.
Mominul Islam had a struggle with poverty since the beginning of his life. He did not get the opportunity to receive education, but his thirst for knowledge never faded. He read a newspaper for the first time 8-9 years ago. From that moment, new horizons of acquiring knowledge opened up before him.
While most people show sympathy for beggars, Mominul Islam is an exception. He spends a large part of his alms money to buy newspapers every day. He said, I get to know the news of the country by reading newspapers. It keeps me connected to the world.
When a beggar like Mominul Islam reads newspapers every day, it is a big lesson for the society. While many of us are indifferent to acquiring knowledge, he is expanding his perspective by reading newspapers every day on his own initiative.
Mominul Islam’s sincere wish is that if a system is created in society where everyone can easily acquire knowledge, then many will benefit. Poverty cannot be an obstacle in the way of acquiring knowledge, if there is a desire.
Md. Mominul Islam stands as an example before us. His habit of reading newspapers highlights an enlightened aspect not only of him, but of our society. This man seems to be spreading the light of his knowledge on Dinajpur’s Railway Station Road, which is an inspiration for all of us. Truly, the light of knowledge is never dependent on money. It is the fruit of willpower and effort.
