International Desk: As per his election promise, US President Donald Trump has imposed retaliatory tariffs on various countries around the world. He claimed that these tariffs were imposed to reduce the US trade deficit and protect US industry. The whole of Asia, including Bangladesh, has not been exempted from his strict tariff policy.
Tariffs have been imposed on countries like China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq, and Sri Lanka.

Among Asian countries, the highest tariff rate is 50 (North Korea and Russia) and the lowest is 10 (Maldives, Bhutan, Nepal and some other countries).
Bangladesh
The tariff rate imposed on Bangladesh is 37 percent, which is relatively high among Asian countries.
Effective from when
Trump’s announced retaliatory tariffs will be effective in two phases. In the first phase, the minimum tariff (10 percent) will be effective from April 5. In the second phase, the higher tariff (such as 37 percent for Bangladesh) will be effective from April 9.
