Sharifa Begum Shiuli:
The people of Rangpur have woken up about the Teesta Master Plan. To this end, a 48-hour program will be held with lakhs of people at 11 points of the Teesta river in 5 districts of Rangpur on February 17 and 18 under the slogan ‘Jago Bahe Teesta Bachai’ demanding the implementation of the Teesta River Water Agreement and Master Plan. Through this program, the issue of discrimination over Teesta water will be made known to the entire world.
The organization’s chief coordinator and BNP’s Rangpur Divisional Organizing Secretary Principal Asadul Habib Dulu said this at a press conference on Saturday (February 15) at the auditorium of a prestigious hotel in the city.
The organization’s chief coordinator and BNP’s Rangpur Divisional Organizing Secretary Principal Asadul Habib Dulu is speaking at the press conference.
The former deputy minister said that for a long time, the people of Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Gaibandha districts, which are surrounded by the Teesta River, have been victims of water discrimination in the Teesta River. The people of the northern region have been demanding the Teesta Water Treaty from the previous fascist Sheikh Hasina government. But due to that government’s knee-jerk foreign policy, the people’s aspirations have not been implemented. When the Indian government asked the Awami League to choose whether to accept the Teesta Water Treaty or remain in power, they gave priority to power. Dulu also said that China, a friendly country of Bangladesh, had formulated a design for the Teesta Master Plan in 2016. The width of the 8-kilometer Teesta River will be reduced to one and a half kilometers. Wide roads, guide dams, satellite cities, economic zones, housing and tourism centers will be built on both sides of the river. The establishment of the economic zone will provide employment to millions of unemployed people. The people of Rangpur were optimistic that the once mighty Teesta River would regain its youth. The Teesta Master Plan will be a project to save the lives of the people on the banks of the river. But the fallen Awami League government did not implement that project.
Asadul Habib Dulu also said that recently two government advisors spoke at a public hearing on the Teesta River in Rangpur. They want to do some work on the Teesta River this year. There are objections among the people of Teestapar in this regard. There is no need to waste people’s tax money by doing sporadic work on the Teesta before implementing the master plan. The people of Teestapar have suffered a lot. Even though there is a delay, everyone wants the Teesta Master Plan to be implemented in a planned manner.
Present at the press conference were the coordinator of the Teesta River Protection Movement, metropolitan BNP convener Shamsuzzaman Samu, member secretary Adv. Mahfuz-un-Nabi Don, district BNP member secretary Anisur Rahman Laku, members Emdadul Haque Bhorsa and Salekuzzaman Salek, and journalists from various electronic and print media.
