Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi is being released from prison. But this time he has to stay under house arrest from prison. In February 2021, a military junta overthrew the civilian government led by Suu Chyi.  Suu chyi was moved to a government building in Naypyidaw on Monday (July 24) local time, several prison sources confirmed. He has been serving a sentence of solitary confinement for almost a year. The 78-year-old leader has been sentenced to 33 years on various charges. Since then, the country has descended into civil war. Thousands of people lost their lives in the clashes between the army and the rebels. His sentence was announced in a military court in great secrecy. For almost two years, there was no information about Suu Kyi’s condition. His transfer from prison has not been confirmed by the military junta government. However, the move to release him from prison and put him under house arrest is seen by many as positive. The junta government has been under pressure since the beginning to release the country’s democratically elected leader. Earlier there were rumors that Suu Kyi was ill. But the junta government denied that rumour. A source at the prison where he was held in Naypyidaw earlier this week confirmed that he is in good health. Thailand’s foreign minister also confirmed this month that he met with Aung San Suu Kyi during a visit to the country. However, he did not give any detailed information in this regard.
