There is no end to the allegations against Siddhirganj DPDC NOCS Sub-Divisional Engineer Belayet Hossain. Many allegations have been made against this opportunistic engineer, including illegal line connection, withholding files, and providing meters in exchange for money. He is also accused of evading office.
It has been alleged that Ramrajtva established dominance in the electricity office by using the influence of former Awami League MP Mirza Azam. After the country’s transformation on August 5, he continued his bribery trade under the shadow of a central BNP leader. He formed a bribery syndicate including Deputy Assistant Engineer Md. Sanwar Hossain, Lineman Md. Mohsin, Shahadat Hossain, Jahangir Hossain, Meter Reader Mobarak Hossain, and Super Bazaar Akbar.
It has been alleged that Sub-Divisional Engineer Belayet Hossain Syndicate took a bribe of 12 lakh taka and connected a 45 kilowatt meter instead of a 102 kilowatt load and a 45 kilowatt load instead of a 135 kilowatt load to an institution called Umme Sumaiya under the Mouchak Feeder. This is causing the transformer to overheat. As a result, DPDC is suffering a huge financial loss. Its customer numbers are 38198931 and 38181316. Instead of setting up its own substation, he took a bribe of 7 lakh taka and connected the line from the residentially supplied transformer. For this misdeed, Belayet Syndicate is taking a benefit of 1 lakh taka every month from the owner of the institution.
When asked about this, the owner of the institution, Zakir Hossain, said, “I took the line connection officially.”
Besides, Habib Mia of Mizmiji Dakshin Para area said, “There were two meters in a 7-storey house in my establishment. Now I am applying for 11 more meters. They visited my house and said that I have to get an HT connection. When I went to him, he demanded a bribe of 6 lakh taka.”
Several customers who did not want to be named said that Engineer Belayet disconnects the electricity connection to the people of the syndicate whenever they delay in paying the monthly rent. Later, if a large bribe is paid, they come and reconnect it.
When asked, DPDC NOCS Sub-Divisional Engineer Belayet Hossain claimed that these allegations are not correct.
Siddhirganj DPDC Executive Engineer Amit Adhikari said, “I am not aware of any such complaint. If anyone has made such a complaint, action will be taken against them after investigation.”
