Shariatpur Correspondent:
A case has been filed against the former officer-in-charge of Naria Police Station in Shariatpur on charges of torturing and extorting a BNP leader four years ago. Today, Sunday (December 22), the case was filed in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Naria Amli Court Judge Md. Shakib Hossain by Upazila BNP Organizing Secretary Matiur Rahman Sagar. Taking cognizance of the case, the court has ordered the Gopalganj Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate and submit a report.
The accused in the case are Abhani Sankar (55), former officer-in-charge of Naria police station, former sub-inspector (SI) of the police station Haider Ali (40), Jubo League leader Sujan Khan (45), son of the deceased Helal Khan of Sureshwar village in the upazila, and Awami League leader Faruk Khan (60), son of the deceased Zafar Khan of the same village.
According to the complaint and allegations in the case, the plaintiff was a BNP-supported chairman candidate in the 2021 Gharisar Union Parishad election. He had also contested the previous Union Parishad election for a paddy sheaf. The accused harassed and intimidated the plaintiff in various ways at various times to prevent him from being elected as he was of the same race as Awami League-nominated chairman A. Rob Khan in the previous UP election. The plaintiff, being a businessman, needed cash when his college student son Zahid, who was on his way home from Sureshwar, took Tk 3 lakh from his relative and was forcibly detained in a room along with the money by Jubo League leaders Sujan and Faruk Khan. Later, when the plaintiff received the information and sought the help of 999, the Naria police station went to the spot and rescued the plaintiff’s son Mizanur Rahman Zahid and brought the accused to the Naria police station. But later, since the accused were in power, a case was filed against Zahid and his father Matiur Rahman Sagar for alleged human trafficking. At that time, Tk 3 lakh was recovered from Zahid, but the police confiscated Tk 1 lakh in the case. Later, the accused extorted Tk 10 lakh from the plaintiff at various stages. In this incident, the accused conspired with each other to create a new incident and filed a charge sheet under the Foreign Employment and Non-Emigration Act, 2013. Later, the plaintiff was forced to compromise with the accused for 2 lakh taka in cash.
When asked about the reason for filing the case 4 years after the incident, the plaintiff in the case, Matiur Rahman Sagar, said, “There was no rule of law in the country for the last 17 years. The murderer Hasina’s party, Awami League, was in charge of the government illegally. At that time, let alone filing a case against the Awami League OC, if I spoke against them, they would have killed me. That is why I could not file a case at that time. Now the country is independent, the rule of law has been established. That is why I filed a case. If there is a fair and impartial investigation, I will get justice.”
When asked about the extortion taken from former officer-in-charge of Naria Police Station, Avni Shankar, he hung up the phone.
Shariatpur Police Superintendent Md. Nazrul Islam said, “I have heard that a case has been filed against four people including former OC of Naria, Avni Shankar. I will know the details when I get the paper.”
