Police have arrested Md. Mizan (22), who is involved in the murder of Nirav Sheikh (17) of Kalukhali in Rajbari. Arrested Mizan is the son of Tendu Sheikh of Bhagalpur village in Kalukhali upazila.
On March 23, police recovered the body of Nirav Sheikh with an iron chain and plastic bag tied around his waist on the banks of the Padma River in Bagjhapa Salepur area of Ratandia union under Kalukhali police station. The deceased Nirav is the son of Ziarul Sheikh of Harinbaria village in Ratandia union.
Rajbari Police Superintendent Mosha Shamima Parvin confirmed the matter at a press conference at the Superintendent’s office on April 6 (Sunday) afternoon.
At the press conference, the Superintendent of Police said that Nirav Sheikh went missing from his home, Madhabpur Bazar area of Harinbari village in Kalukhali upazila, on March 20. Later, on March 21, at around 8:30 pm, an unknown person called Nirav Sheikh’s father’s mobile phone from his mobile phone, saying that Nirav Sheikh was being held hostage and a ransom of Tk 20 lakh was demanded to release him. Later, the mobile number of the ransom demander was found to be switched off.
Two days later, on March 23, at around 10:30 am, police recovered Nirav Sheikh’s body tied with iron chains and a plastic bag in the Padma River at Bagjhapa Salehpur in Ratandia Union of Kalukhali Upazila. On the same day, Nirav’s father filed a kidnapping and murder case against unknown persons at Kalukhali Police Station. Multiple teams, including the police and DB, were deployed to unravel the mystery of the murder. At one stage of the investigation of the case, based on information technology and secret information, the accused Mizan was arrested from his residence in Bhagalpur, Kalukhali Upazila, at around 10:30 pm on Saturday (April 5). Arrested accused Mizan told the police during interrogation that both Nehad Ali alias Liaqat Sheikh and Qayyum Sheikh are cousins of Nirob’s father. Arrested accused Mizan said that there was a dispute between Nehad Sheikh and Qayyum Sheikh over the extraction of sand using a dredger. Since Nirob’s father sided with Nehad in the incident and Nirob’s father had a good relationship with Nehad, Nirob’s cousin Qayyum became vengeful and planned to kidnap, ransom and kill Nirob Sheikh to take revenge.
The Superintendent of Police further said that after killing Nirob by suffocating him with a veil, arrested accused Mizan tied a plastic bag filled with sand around his waist with a nylon rope and an iron chain and threw it into the Padma River in order to hide his body. Arrested Mizan will be handed over to the court. Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused involved in this murder.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Sharif Al Rajib, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debabrata Sarkar, DIO-1 Abdur Rahim, DB OC Mofizur Rahman, local journalists and senior officials of the district police were present at the press conference.
