There has been a police chase and clash with the students of Cumilla University (Kubi) around the blockade program of the quota reform movement. At least 20 people including police, journalists and students were injured. Some of them were seen being taken to the hospital by the university ambulance.
The incident took place at Kotbari Bishwaroad area of ​​Cumilla on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at 3 pm on Thursday (July 11).
It is known that as per the pre-announced program, the police first stopped the students when they wanted to block the road in the Kotbari Bishwaroad area with a procession at 3 pm. Later, at one stage of the argument, both parties began to chase each other. Meanwhile, the police dispersed the students by firing blank bullets and tear shells. At least 20 people including police, journalists and students were injured. Some of them were seen being taken to the hospital by the university ambulance. Two of the injured are in critical condition. The situation in the campus is tense.
The protesting students said that as part of the central programme, they were stopped by the police when they wanted to go towards Kotbari in Cumilla on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the afternoon. At one stage of the argument, they ran into each other with the police. After that, the chase stopped for a while but started again in front of the Ansar camp.
University proctor Kazi Omar Siddiqui said that two injured people have been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital. Efforts are underway to control the situation.
Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Firoz said, ‘Police are in the field to maintain a peaceful environment. No one will be allowed to disturb the highway.’
