Banned polythene bags are being widely used in Jhalakathi pipes. Although the use of polythene bags which are harmful to the environment is prohibited, various traders have been using polythene bags extensively. The shopkeepers of various markets of the upazila are handing over a polythene bag to the customer even if they buy products worth 20 rupees. These banned polythene bags are a serious threat to the environment and are causing various problems including waterlogging by obstructing the sewage system of the city.
There is no way to understand that polythene is actually illegal. The bag is harmful to the environment in the hands of the buyers and sellers of the market. Wholesale and retail shops are selling polythene openly.
The question has arisen in the public mind, who has benefited by making polythene illegal?
Polythene bags are being used freely in every shop starting from fish market, vegetable market in Nalchi. Polythene bags of different sizes are being used without any kind of cover. No one cares that it is officially banned.
Rajibul Islam, a local resident, said that the reason why water accumulates on various roads in the municipal area is because the drainage system is stuck in different sizes of polythene bags, due to which the water does not go to the drain. Eco-friendly jute bags should be used. In this the environment will be good and we will also get rid of the trouble.
Businessman Zahid Khan said, since the buyers do not bring the market bags with them, we have to provide the bags. In this case, we use polythene bags as they are cheaper. Hundreds of shoppers come every day, most of them without bags. So they cannot be given any other bag considering the cost. But it is true that many people know that any product made of silt is very harmful to the environment. BD Clean member Naeem Mallick said, ‘Whenever we BD Clean members go anywhere for cleaning, most of the places we find are abandoned polythene bags, which have no chance of being easily decomposed and mixed with soil. It is adversely affecting our urban life and agriculture sector. Even after the ban on polythene, the government should strictly monitor who is producing and marketing these bags in the black market. People should be discouraged from its use by campaigning at the grass root level. More campaign should be done about the environmental damage caused by the use of polythene bags. Besides, the promotion of the benefits of using bags made of jute should be increased. Upazila executive officer. Nazrul Islam said that the campaign will be increased to discourage the general public from using polythene bags. Necessary action will be taken against those involved in the production and marketing of polythene bags.
