Comilla Correspondent: A patient named Osman Gani (47) tragically died after falling from an unsecured extra bed on the 5th floor balcony of Comilla Medical College (CUMEC) Hospital.
The accident occurred shortly before midnight on Friday (March 7) in the hospital’s surgery department. He died immediately after falling. The deceased, Osman Gani, lives in Daulatpur, Ward No. 2, Jagannathpur Union No. 6, Comilla Sadar.
The deceased’s wife and close relatives said that Osman Ghani was restless because he felt unwell. Unable to sleep, he sat leaning against the wall pillar next to the bed. Since the bed was on the balcony, there was no iron grill or wall protection next to it. There was a waist-high wall railing slightly above the bed, but there was no protection next to it. Osman Ghani’s wife was lying in the same bed.
Osman Gani’s wife, Kohinoor Begum, said that shortly before midnight, she saw her husband roll off the couch, head down, and fall down. She said, “When his feet touched my body, I woke up and tried to save him by holding his feet, but I couldn’t. He fell down.”
It is learned that Osman Gani came to the hospital for an operation a week ago. He had to wander around for two days as there were no beds available in the hospital. Later, he was admitted by arranging a bed in an unsecured place near the veranda for 500 taka through a broker.
Immediately after the incident, no one in charge of the surgery department was found at the hospital. Ward Master Billal Hossain removed the bed from the scene.
Kohinoor Begum, the deceased’s wife, said, “My husband came for treatment. But he lost his life due to the hospital’s mismanagement and negligence. I want justice for this.”
The incident has raised questions about mismanagement and inadequate security measures by the hospital authorities. The victim’s family has demanded an investigation into the incident and action against those responsible.
