Zakir Hossain Goalanda (Rajbari) Correspondent:
Thousands of people cross the river every day on the Daulatdia-Paturia in Rajbari and the Aricha-Pabna Kazirhat river route in Manikganj. However, most of the launches plying on these waterways are in dilapidated condition. They do not have adequate life-saving equipment and proper fitness. Passengers are afraid of major boat accidents as these launches ply with passengers in excess of their capacity during the Eid season.
It has been seen on the spot that 33 launches are plying on the Daulatdia-Paturia and Aricha-Kazirhat river routes. Of these, 26 are large (MV) and 7 are small (ML) launches. The launches are 37 to 48 years old. Although the exterior is brightly painted, the mechanical parts including the engine have been repaired. Most of the launches are in short supply of fire extinguishers, fire buckets, life jackets, lifebuoys and first aid kits. MV Nazir, MV Bidyut, MV Khandaker and MV Tumpa are in the worst condition. The body fitness of these launches is very poor. However, they also have clearances from the Department of Shipping. Although there should be an experienced driver (master) as per the rules, some launches are being operated by inexperienced drivers. Although the administration’s supervision is required for safety, in reality, passengers have complained that it is absent. Several passengers have expressed their concerns about the current condition of the launches.
A passenger named Nazrul Islam said that every time, many more people board the launch than there are seats. The condition of most of the launches is very bad.
Due to the need for work, we have to travel in risky launches. However, we have to travel in fear. The authorities are indifferent to this matter.
Daulatdia Ghat Manager of Aricha Launch Malik Samiti Md. Nurul Anwar Milon claimed that the launch crossing before and after Eid was under the overall supervision of the administration. Each launch also has a fitness certificate.
However, BIWTA Traffic Supervisor Md. Shimul Islam said, the launches are very old. Of these, four or five are in very bad condition. However, we cannot do anything because of the clearance certificate from the Department of Shipping. Launch owners have been warned repeatedly.
Thousands of passengers are crossing in risky launches every day. Experts fear that a major accident could occur at any time if adequate supervision and effective repair measures are not taken.
