Poet Shawkat Osman was a non-sectarian and rational person. His writings spoke of modernity and the liberation of the exploited. It is time to be inspired by his writings.
The speakers said this in a discussion held at the Bishwa Sahitya Kendra auditorium on Thursday afternoon. The Shawkat Osman Memorial Council organized a discussion meeting on the occasion of the 108th birthday of poet Shawkat Osman. January 2 was the 108th birth centenary of Shawkat Osman. At the beginning, a documentary made on poet Shawkat Osman was screened. Then the discussion began.

In his speech at the discussion, Bangla Academy President Professor Dr. Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque said that Shawkat Osman was one of the few young writers who brought modernity to speech and poetry in the 1940s. His writings were marked by historical awareness and a keen sense of reality.

The General Secretary of the Parishad, Professor Dr. Dipu Siddiqui, said, “Shaukat Osman was a true revolutionary and rebellious writer. He was associated with the anti-fascist literary organization in Kolkata since 1929. He fought against discrimination till his death. As a writer, he did not do it just sitting at home, but when necessary, he also spoke at meetings and seminars and strongly protested against it.”

He had an incomparable contribution to romantic writing. Dr. Dipu Siddiqui drew the attention of the current president to the need to publish the complete works of this great writer from the Bangla Academy and demanded that the current government name a major road in Dhaka after him.

He recalled the memory of the youngest son of the poet Shawkat Osmani. He commented that it is the responsibility of the government to instill in the new generation the courage to stand tall and follow the proverbial honesty and wisdom of their father.

Former Secretary of the Literary Society, Dr. Mohammad Ali Shawkat Osman, while discussing the life philosophy of the writer, said, Shawkat Osman did not depend on anyone. He walked with his head held high and presented the real truth to the public with courage and strength, not only in literature but also through daily columns. He was a prolific writer.
