A hilsa weighing 2 kg 28 grams was sold for 6 thousand taka in Kuakata of Patuakhali. This fish was caught in the net of local fisherman Jamal Hossain in the Bay of Bengal near Kuakata on Friday afternoon. A fish merchant named Hasan bought the fish for 5 thousand taka at the rate of 2 thousand 500 taka per kg. Later he sold it online on Friday evening for 6 thousand rupees. At this time, many people gathered to have a look at the fish.
Fisherman Jamal Hossain said, this year, this is the first time that such a big hilsa fish has been caught in my net. The demand for big fish is high and the price is good. Even now there are not many fish in the sea. But the joy of getting a big fish is much greater. Fisherman Rezaul Islam said that such big fish are rarely available in the market. The fish was first sold at the auction for Tk 1 lakh, but later the fish was sold online for Tk 6,000.
Kalapara Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Apu Saha said that fish of this size mainly live in the deep sea. Large hilsa are not usually caught due to sedimentation in the Andharmanic estuary adjacent to Kuakata Beach. By dredging the estuary and increasing the width of the nets, it is expected that this fish will be caught more.
