Locals have given an ultimatum to the Noakhali Deputy Commissioner and Companiganj Upazila Executive Officer demanding the reconstruction of the Muchapur Regulator in Companiganj, Noakhali, which was submerged in the upstream and flood waters of the Mahuri River in Feni.
They gave this ultimatum at a human chain organized at Zero Point in Basurhat Bazar of the upazila on Thursday (January 30) afternoon. The speakers at the human chain included Noakhali Anti-Discrimination Student Movement convener Arifur Rahman, Companiganj Upazila BNP member secretary Mahmudur Rahman Ripon, Charparbati UP chairman Kazi Hanif Ansari, former Charparbati Union chairman Harunur Rashid Al Harun, Basurhat Municipality Jamaat Ameer Maulana Mosharef Hossain, Charhazari Union BNP member secretary Abul Kalam Azad, US-based BNP leader Morsalin Shamim, Charhazari Hafezia Para Welfare Foundation president Md Ali Dalim, secretary Golam Azam, student representative Md Nazrul Islam, and others.
The speakers at the human chain complained that there was no initiative to build the Mushapur regulator due to the negligence of Noakhali Deputy Commissioner Khandaker Istiak Ahmed and Companiganj Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Tanvir Farhad Shamim. Hundreds of houses have been submerged in the river due to the collapse of the Muchapur regulator. Hundreds of hectares of cropland have been damaged. Blaming illegal sand extraction for the collapse of the regulator, former mayor of Basurhat Municipality and Companiganj Upazila Awami League president Abdul Quader Mirza demanded punishment. The speakers also warned that if the construction of the Muchapur regulator is delayed, the DC-UNO will not be able to sit on the chair in the AC room.
When asked about the complaint, Noakhali Deputy Commissioner (DC) Khandaker Istiak Ahmed rejected the complaint and said, “Just complaining will not work. The work is the responsibility of the Water Development Board. The Water Development Board is studying this and work is underway. If you say this, it will not work in a day.”
