No new brick kilns are allowed, 3491 illegal ones are being closed – Environmental Advisor

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ministry of Water Resources, said that no new brick kiln permits will be issued to prevent air pollution caused by brick kilns.

He said, ‘3 thousand 491 brick kilns without environmental clearance will be closed. All brick kilns built illegally in hilly areas will be shifted.

He said these things in an exchange meeting with the leaders of Department of Environment and Bangladesh Brick Manufacturing Owners Association (BBMOA) in the meeting room of the Ministry on Thursday (September 19). In the meeting, there was a detailed discussion on environment-friendly brick production, modernization of brick kilns and reduction of carbon emissions.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan expressed deep concern about the environmental impact of brick kilns and said, “It is not enough to build buildings, we have to ensure a livable environment for future generations.”

He also said, ‘The average life expectancy of people is decreasing by 5 to 7 years due to air pollution. Therefore, no brick kiln can be operated without license and clearance.

At this time, he also told the officials of the Department of Environment to take strict measures against corruption.

In the exchange meeting, BBMOA leaders highlighted the challenges of the brick industry and suggested adoption of environment-friendly technology. Seeks government’s cooperation to encourage use of green technology in brick kilns and gives memorandum to advisor.

In the meeting, the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Additional Secretary, Director General of the Department of Environment, President of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Brick Manufacturing Owners Association Feroz Haider Khan and leaders from central and different districts spoke.

Earlier, Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan gave guidance to senior officials for successful implementation of various activities in a special meeting of the Ministry.
