The acting chairman of BNP said, if neighboring country India does not provide water or delays in providing it, in the interest of the country and the people, we will have to find a way to save ourselves to save the farmers, save the river, save motherhood, and save our existence. At the same time, we will have to do diplomatic work with neighboring countries and continue discussions. And without wasting time, we think it is urgent for Bangladesh to sign the 1992 Water Convention and the 1997 United Nations Water Flow Convention. There is no alternative to the Teesta Grand Plan to save the northern region from desertification.

Various programs are being held under the banner of the Teesta River Protection Movement at 11 points in five districts of the northern region, including Lalmonirhat, demanding a fair share of the Teesta River water and the implementation of the Teesta Grand Plan. As part of this, Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), said these things while addressing a public rally held on the banks of the Teesta River at 5 pm on Tuesday (February 18), while virtually joining the rally from London.

At that time, he also said, “Our neighboring country is behaving unfriendly towards the people of Bangladesh regarding water distribution. As you all know, the people of Bangladesh have not been freed from the curse of Farakka for almost 50 years now.

You have been holding this movement at 11 points on the Teesta River for two days. Your movement will definitely not go in vain, God willing. Your movement will accelerate the Teesta’s grand plan. God willing, if BNP gets the responsibility of running the state through the people’s vote, all the problems of Teesta will be solved by bringing everyone together. However, you have a responsibility to fulfill, you have a job to do, for that, you have to stand by your beloved party, BNP, in the next national election. BNP needs your support. With your support, with the support of the countrymen, God willing, we will have the opportunity to solve such problems including the Teesta. In the future, we will see Teesta in your villages, in your homes.

Earlier in the morning, a march with the participation of thousands of people started from the northern end of the Teesta Road Bridge in Lalmonirhat and circled around Kaunia Bus Stand in Rangpur before returning. The participants of the march displayed placards after entering the knee-deep water of the Teesta River.

People from different places came to the river banks from the morning of last Monday (February 17) to make the 48-hour continuous program a success. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir spoke as the chief guest at the official inauguration of this public gathering.

The protesters spent the night there after holding discussions, plays, and performing folk songs from noon.

Principal Asadul Habib Dulu, the chief coordinator of the movement to protect the Teesta River, BNP’s Rangpur divisional organizing secretary and Lalmonirhat district BNP president, said that this movement is a movement to realize the life demands of the people living on the banks of the Teesta River. Thousands of people have spent the night in the Teesta Char, ignoring the cold, to implement the 48-hour program. Everyone demands that a fair share of the Teesta river water should be given quickly and the Teesta Mega Project should be implemented quickly.

It is worth noting that for a long time, one-sided water control has been being carried out by building a barrage in Ghazoldoba in India. And because of that, the Teesta river in the Bangladesh part has lost its flow and is now dying.
