Mountains are the lungs of the earth, keeping it fresh is only possible through social forestry. With the aim of increasing the tree resources and improving the environment in the country, a nationwide tree planting campaign involving people from all walks of life is taking place every year with the non-stop efforts of the forest officials and workers. As a result of this, public awareness is being created on the one hand and on the other hand the people of the country are spontaneously changing their destiny by planting trees. It is known that not only the people’s fortunes are changing, but also this arboriculture is playing a big role in the development of the country’s environment.
Social forestry is a great initiative of the government to involve common and poor people in plantation and forestry. Meanwhile, Bara Dharmapur Mauza of Lalmai Hills in Comilla has been filled with greenery under the social forestry program to protect the balance of forest land.
It is known that under the Kotbari Range Office of Comilla Division, in 2021-2022, gardens were created on 25 hectares of hilly land by recovering the occupied land in 15 spots of Bara Radhampur Mauza of Comilla Sadar Dakshin Bit.
Also, 12 km link roads were afforested in the upazila under Laksam and Nangalkot SFPC of the district. In 2022-2023, under the Kotbari Range Office of Comilla Social Forest Department, 9 spots of Sadar Bit Bara Rdhampur Mauza were rescued and a garden was created on 20 hectares of hilly land with the cooperation of Sadar Dakshin Upazila Chairman Golam Sarwar.
Also 18 more spots in Bara Dharmapur Mauza this year 20 hectares of land was recovered. Plantation is planned in FY 2023-2024 on reclaimed land.
It was seen on the ground today on Tuesday, Sadar Dakshin Upazila Lalmai Pahar under Sadar Bit of Comilla Kotbari Range Office is protecting the natural balance, mitigating the adverse effects of climate change, preserving biodiversity and as a source of livelihood for the marginalized people, Mohammad Ali, Divisional Forest Officer of the Forest Department, Kotbari. Range officer Moazzem Hossain Khandkar and field level officials are working tirelessly.
The afforestation of Comilla Social Forest Division provides free roaming for extinct wildlife and various species of animals and birds. And due to the strictness of the administration and the forest department, hunting of animals and birds has stopped.
Forest lovers and common people appreciated this initiative of Comilla Social Forest Department. Comilla Range Officer Moazzem Hossain Khandkar said that beneficiaries are benefiting from sustainable forest and social forestry activities involving poor people as beneficiaries. Social forestry has ensured social and economic benefits to the landless, poor, widows and distressed rural people recruited as partners.
