Md. Rajib Sikder, a UP member of Ward No. 7 of that union, has been accused of embezzling the goods of two old bridges on the canal in Long Union of Nazirpur Upazila of Pirojpur.
Locals alleged that Rajiv had embezzled the iron material of the old bridge over Chalnabari canal on Ghoshkathi road from Shaheed Janani College of Lagha Union. Two new bridges are being constructed in place of those two iron bridges.
Local Russell Bepari has filed a written complaint with Nazirpur Upazila Engineer and the concerned office demanding a proper investigation and trial of the incident of bridge material theft.
An investigation committee has been formed in this incident. However, upazila engineer Zakir Hossain Mia said that he has not received the investigation report so far.
However, denying the embezzlement of the goods of the bridge, the accused UP member Rajeev said that the people of the opposite party have made false and fabricated allegations against him to humiliate him.
Ranju Sikder, a local, said that two iron bridges were being constructed on Chaulabari Canal due to the collapse of them. However, UP member Rajeev embezzled the goods of the two bridges without using them for any public purpose. He alleged that Rajeev embezzled the goods of Purano Setu in the middle of last month for personal gain.
Expressing anger at this incident, the locals said that they stopped Rajiv from taking the goods of the bridge, but he did not listen to anyone’s words.
Regarding the incident, Ashutosh Bepari, chairman of the Union Parishad of Lagha, said that he had heard from the locals about the embezzlement of the goods of the old iron bridge. However, he said that no goods of this bridge have been deposited in the Union Parishad.
According to the rules, if any bridge is broken in any union, they have to be reported in writing to the upazila executive officer and upazila engineer. Later they have to be sold by tender through a resolution in the meeting or can be used for other purposes of that union.
However, Nazirpur Upazila Engineer Md Zakir Hossain said that further legal action will be taken against the accused after receiving the investigation report of the complaint.
