Mystery of Jhalakathi murder case revealed: Police Superintendent’s press briefing

A retired army member named Delwar Hossain Mridha (60) was slaughtered and killed in Jhalakathi on March 8. Immediately after the incident, the locals caught a person named Sohrab Hossain from the same area and handed him over to the police.

A day after the incident, on March 10, the son of the deceased, Mahamudul Hasan Babu, filed a case with Jhalakathi Police Station. The accused Sohrab, who was arrested in the case, gave a confessional statement under Section 164 to the magistrate in the court, giving sensational information that he committed the murder alone.

Jhalakathi Police Superintendent Ujjal Kumar Roy gave a press briefing on Wednesday, March 12, giving this information. Sadar Police Station OC Moniruzzaman, the investigating officer (OC Investigation) of the case Mehedi Hasan and media workers were present at the time.

While briefing the media, Superintendent of Police Ujjal Kumar Roy said, citing the statement of the accused, “Evidence of Sohrab’s involvement in the murder of Delwar Hossain has been found. He has given a statement in court. On the other hand, the police have recovered evidence of the case, including a sharp knife used in the murder, the mobile phone used by the deceased, and the blood-stained pants and shirt worn by the accused during the incident from the pond and the surrounding area.”

The SP also said, “The murderer, Sohrab Hossain Akon, is 49 years old. He is the son of the deceased Sirajul Haque Akon of Mangalahata village under Barisal Airport Police Station. He was working as a caretaker at the house of the deceased Akbar of Goranga village in Binoykathi union under Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station. Sohrab killed Delwar Hossain thinking that he had a lot of pension money in his house.”

The deceased’s son and plaintiff in the case, Mahmudul Hasan Babu, said, “My father, Delwar Hossain Mridha, retired from his service as a soldier in the army. He had a stroke and was living at home guarding the land. He had withdrawn his pension money before the incident. My father had sold bamboo for 5,000 taka to a relative of the murderer, Sohrab Hossain.

Sohrab had been helping a daily wage laborer in agricultural work at home for 2 days before the incident. He was often intoxicated. Sohrab killed my father to take the money that was in the house.
