The Bangabandhu Mural, built at a cost of about 3.3 million taka in front of the Laksam Upazila Parishad, has now become a thorn in the side of the Upazila Parishad.
The mural was constructed by Maa Enterprise, a company owned by former chairman of Kandirpar Union Parishad Omar Farooq, with the funding from the Upazila Parishad revenue fund, at an estimated cost of 32 lakh, 98 thousand, 1 hundred and 85 taka.
But this mural is now a thorn in the side of the Upazila Parishad. It is worth noting that this mural was destroyed by the angry student crowd after August 5! In that sense, the huge amount of money spent has completely gone down the drain.
Sources say that the new complex building of the Upazila Parishad has been built at a cost of crores of taka. There is a huge field in front of it. Eminent people believe that the Bangabandhu mural built in front of this field and the main gate of the Upazila Parishad has ruined the beauty of the entire complex.
Two contracting companies, Nishat Enterprise and Maa Enterprise, participated in the tender for the work, and Maa Enterprise received the work order and completed the construction of the Bangabandhu Mural, as well as collecting the bill and security deposit. There is also widespread doubt about the huge cost of constructing the mural.
After August 5, the security deposit was withdrawn (in October) while the owner of the mother enterprise, Omar Faruk, was in hiding. Various public representatives of Laksam have done work worth hundreds of crores of taka, ignoring the government’s instructions that a chairman cannot be involved in the contracting business with the government.
There is also widespread criticism over how the security deposit from the contracting company of the person in hiding was withdrawn.
