A father has been accused of strangling his child to death on suspicion of his wife’s extramarital affair in Muradnagar, Comilla. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon in Uttarpara village of Muradnagar Upazila Sadar.
The accused, Qari Abu Naeem alias Naeem Huzur (45), is the son of the late Abdul Khalek of Uttarpara village of Upazila Sadar. He led the prayer in a mosque in Dhaka. The deceased child Abdullah alias Rafsan (16 months) is Abu Naeem’s third child.
Shahida Akhter, mother of child Abdullah alias Rafsan, said that since the birth of child Rafsan, his father could not accept him as his own child. There had been a long-standing dispute in their family life over this issue. On Saturday morning, his father Naeem wanted to take child Rafsan to Comilla district town for treatment. When the child’s mother wanted to go with them, her husband stopped her. His mother Shahida Akhter could not take the matter very well. So, since she could not go herself, she sent her eldest son, 12-year-old Anas, with her husband as a travel companion. Within a short time, her eldest son returned home alone. After returning home, the eldest son Anas told her that his father had left him in the Muradnagar Sadar market and gone to Comilla alone with his younger brother. Later, around 12 noon, his father returned home with Rafsan, who was dead. He told him that Rafsan had died in the car in the Kangshanagar area on the way to Comilla city due to illness. However, mother Shahida Akhter claimed that her husband had been threatening to kill her child for a long time. It was not because of illness that her husband killed Rafsan by strangling him.
Locals said that since the birth of Rafsan, her husband had called arbitration meetings many times, suspecting his wife of having an affair. At each arbitration, his father Naeem threatened to kill Rafsan. However, since the arbitral tribunal could not provide any evidence of his wife’s extramarital affair, they were living together on the advice of local elders. Perhaps the child Rafsan was killed because of his wife’s suspicion of extramarital affair.
Muradnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahidur Rahman confirmed the child’s death and said that the child’s father Naeem Mia has been arrested in this incident. The body of the child Rafsan has been recovered and sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Legal action will be taken according to the autopsy report.
