Israel has emerged as one of Microsoft’s top global partners since the Gaza offensive began.
A recently leaked document reveals Microsoft’s deep ties with Israel during the genocidal war in Gaza. The leaked internal document shows that Microsoft has emerged as a major supplier of cloud services and artificial intelligence, or AI, to the Israeli military. The US software giant’s support for the country has increased dramatically since the conflict in Gaza began on October 7, 2023.
Documents obtained by Drop Sight News, an independent news site on politics and war, show that Israel has emerged as one of Microsoft’s top global partners since the Gaza offensive began, spending nearly $10 million on engineering assistance and consulting.Microsoft has yet to comment publicly on the matter. The tech giant did not respond to a request for comment from Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency.
The total value of Israel’s contract with the tech company could not be determined from the leaked documents, as an additional $30 million in assistance is under consideration for 2024. However, it is believed to be significant. The report says that the Israeli military’s use of Microsoft services has increased significantly. Between June 2023 and April 2024, cloud storage usage increased by more than 155%, reaching its peak just before the Rafah attack in May 2024.
Microsoft’s most widely used services include translation tools and Azure OpenAI, which account for about 75 percent of total military usage. The Gaza war can be described as a “gold rush” for various technology companies seeking military contracts, with Microsoft making many concessions to secure a deal with Israel.Asked by Anadolu about the extent of its relationship with Microsoft, the Israeli Defense Ministry said, “We will not comment on this.”
