Due to the upstream surge and heavy rains, Teesta river water point is flowing near the danger level.  Authorities have opened 44 gates of Teesta Barrage to control water.  Houses and roads in the low-lying areas along the banks of Teesta river were submerged in water.

At 3pm on Thursday (June 20), Kaunia Point recorded a water flow of 29 metres, which is 25 centimeters above the danger line.

At the point of Teesta Barrage, the country’s largest irrigation project, the Teesta’s water flow is flowing just 24 cm below the danger level.  The Water Development Board said that short-term flooding may occur in the lower areas of Lalmonirhat within the next 48 hours.

Although the water at Dalia barrage point has not exceeded the danger level, due to the reduction of water holding capacity due to silting in the Teesta river, there is little water in Khuniagach, Kalmati, Rajpur, Gokunda Union and some other lower areas of Aditmari Upazila, Mahishkhocha, Palashi, Mahishashahar Kaliganj Upazila Votmari, Shailmari, Nohali, Char Bairati.  , Gaddimari, Doani of Hatibandha Upazila, Nij Sheikh Sundar of Saniajan Union, Bagher Char, Dhubani, Sindurna, Patikapara, Dauabari and Dahgram Union of Patgram Upazila, houses, houses and educational institutions in the lower areas along the banks of Teesta.  After visiting these areas, it was seen that various types of crops including paddy, nuts and rural roads have been submerged due to the ingress of river water.  As a result, there has been a shortage of fresh water along with traffic problems.

As the water holding capacity of the river has decreased, the low-lying areas have been inundated and floods have occurred, so the locals have demanded visible steps to be taken to dig the river or implement the Teesta Master Plan.

Zahid Hossain of Govardhan area said, “It has been raining for the past few days.  Water has entered our area due to water from India.  There are many problems including cooking and walking.

Hossain Miah of the same area said that because the area is low, the roads are also low.  So little water floods and roads sink.

Farooq Miah, a farmer of Gokunda area of Sadar Upazila, said that due to the opening of 44 sluices of Teesta Barrage due to the opening of 44 sluices of Teesta Barrage, water has suddenly entered the lower areas of Teesta River in Lalmonirhat due to which the water from the hills in India has entered Bangladesh.  Due to heavy rainfall since last few days, some areas along the river banks have been flooded due to rising water level. Other crop lands have been inundated causing great suffering to the people.  Locals are in trouble with special cattle.

Lalmonirhat Water Development Board Executive Engineer Sunil Kumar Roy said that floods have occurred in Sikkim, India.  Mainly upstream water has increased the water in Teesta.  If water enters the Teesta river from the upstream, the entire area along the Teesta river in our part of Bangladesh may be flooded.
