The turn table for turning the engine and coaches of the railway at Lalmonirhat, built during the British period, has been broken for almost three decades. So we had to go to Dhaka to rotate the engine or coach. It was a waste of time and money for the railways. A new turn table has been prepared in the sick line area of Lalmonirhat railway station at a cost of Tk. 25 lakhs to save two tows. There have been allegations of irregularities regarding the inauguration of the present turn table, which is unable to support the turning of coaches or engines before the inauguration.
It is known that in 1993, the railway department stopped using the railway engine and coach turning table at Lalmonirhat built during the British period when it broke down. Since then, the coaches and engines of Lalmonirhat division were taken to Dhaka every few months to rotate the coaches and engines. So Lalmonirhat Railway took the initiative to construct turn table in sick line area. For the construction of which the Railway Department allocated Tk. 25 lakhs. After receiving the allocation, the construction work of this turn table started in the month of January this year with the design and technology of Engineer (Carriage and Wagon) Tasruzzaman (Babu) of the Divisional Railway Office and it was completed in the month of March. However, Tasruzzaman (Babu), the engineer of the divisional railway office, has performed the duties of the main contractor without any tender for the construction of the turn table. A detailed source in that office has confirmed the loss of Tk. 25 lakh in the construction of turn table by making six-nine fake vouchers to Ujjal and Himel, one of his associates working in that office.
Another detailed source said that the turn table construction facility has three tiers of paved walls, which are known as boundary walls, protection walls and line walls. Although the construction work of this turn table was completed in March of this year, the officials of Bangladesh Railways have expressed their dissatisfaction after the inspection. Because the engine and the coach can be rotated by lifting the carriage of the normal train and pushing the mobile and 10/15 people. As a result, before the inauguration, the turn table, which is incapable of supporting the rotation of coaches or engines, is supposed to be officially inaugurated at the end of April, but now there are many doubts about the inauguration.
In this regard, Lalmonirhat divisional railway office engineer (carriage and wagon) Tasruzzaman (Babu) said, the effectiveness of the turn table made with indigenous technology has been successfully verified. This is the first turn table manufactured in Bangladesh. Capable of carrying a load of 350 tons, the turn table has a bridge of 14 tons. The engine and coach will be lifted and rotated on it. Regarding the tender for the construction of turn tables, the engineer of the divisional railway office also said that the tender process has been completed in accordance with the rules of our railways. There was no irregularity in the work. The contractor did the work, I just looked after. But when asked to know the name of the contractor, he asked the representative to apply under the Right to Information Act. Lalmonirhat Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Abdus Salam was not available when contacted over phone.
