The railway authorities have demolished the market worth several crores of taka of former Chhatra League leader and former publicity secretary of the district Awami League, the late Zahurul Haque Mamun, which was illegally built on railway land on the main road adjacent to the BDR Gate in Lalmonirhat district town.
The railway authorities conducted this day-long eviction drive today, Sunday (January 12).
The day-long eviction drive was led by Lalmonirhat Divisional Railway Assistant State Officer Abdur Razzak. In the same drive, 17 fruit shops located next to the BDR Gate railway line were also evicted. The illegal establishment built on about one acre of railway land was evicted in the drive.
During the Awami League era, former Chhatra League and Awami League leader Jahurul Haque Mamun and former Chhatra League leader Jahangir Hossain, nephew of District Awami League General Secretary Matiar Rahman, along with several Awami League leaders, occupied railway land and built Alishan Market. Despite repeated notices, the Awami League leaders used party influence to illegally build the market and divide it up.
Later, when Jahurul Haque Mamun died a few years after the market was built, the market remained in the possession of his family. Later, when the interim government was formed after the anti-discrimination student movement, all the top leaders of the district Awami League fled. Later, the Railway Divisional Authority started the eviction drive.
The eviction of illegally constructed structures occupied by Awami League leaders for a long time has brought relief back to the common people. They thanked the interim government and the Railway Authority.
Lalmonirhat Divisional Railway Assistant State Officer Abdur Razzak said that this operation is being conducted as a regular part of the drive to evict illegal structures built on railway land. On the same day, illegal structures built on about one acre of railway land were evicted. He also said that all the illegal structures on railway land will be evicted in phases.
