Lalmonirhat Erosion started as Teesta water receded

The short-term flood situation in the low-lying areas along the river bank of Lalmonirhat has improved due to the rise in the Teesta river due to the upstream surge and heavy rainfall.  However, as soon as the flood water receded, the river began to erode.  Meanwhile, even though the flood water has receded, unpaved roads and crop fields have been damaged in the flooded areas.
With the receding of the flood water, river erosion has occurred at several points in Garibullah para, Chandimari and Sadar upazilas of Kalmati and Bagdora areas of Mahishkhocha union of Aditmari upazila of the district.  Residential houses, mosques and educational institutions in those areas are under threat of demolition.
As of 3pm on Monday (June 24), the country’s largest irrigation project, the Teesta Dalia Barrage Point, has been flowing 75 cm below the flood line.  Earlier last Friday, Teesta water flowed just 10 cm below the flood line.  But in the last 4 days that water has gone down.  Farmers on the banks of the Teesta are busy harvesting the ripe paddy that has risen from the water.  Meanwhile, as the water of the dream period is rapidly receding, the river has started to erode.
Keramat Ali, a farmer of Teesta Garibullah neighborhood, said that there was water in the houses since last 4 days.  Now there is no water at home.  But there is mud outside the house.  Movement is difficult.
Abdur Rashid, a resident of the same area, said the water has reduced.  However, erosion has started on the banks of the river.  If the erosion is not prevented, many houses will be lost in the river.
Amjad Ali of that area said that Teesta was 200 meters away from the house before the flood.  The cropland has gone to the stomach of the river.  Teesta is now at the edge of the house.
Abdul Miah of Kalmati area of ​​Khuniagach Union of Sadar Upazila said that the river erosion started as soon as the water went down from the homestead.  Arable land on Teesta’s stomach.  Now there is no land to move home.
Mosaddek Hossain Chowdhury, Chairman of Mahishkhochcha Union Parishad of Aditmari Upazila, said that the erosion has started in Garibullah neighborhood on the bank of Teesta river of the union.  Hundreds of houses, educational institutions, mosques and many structures are under threat of destruction.
Executive Engineer of Lalmonirhat Water Development Board Sunil Kumar Roy said that recently Additional Director General of Water Development Board MKM Tahmidul Islam visited Teesta river erosion areas in Lalmonirhat.  Quick steps will be taken to prevent erosion of Teesta.
