Due to the breach of the dam in Sikkim, the source of the Teesta River in India, the water level of the Teesta River has risen due to the upstream waves, causing floods in the left bank district of Lalmonirhat.

At 11 am on Thursday (October 05) in Hatibandha Upazila of Lalmonirhat, the water flow at Dalia Point of Teesta Barrage, the country’s largest irrigation project, was recorded at 51.47 meters, which (normal 52.15 meters) is 68 centimeters below the danger level.

But last night the water flow was 25 cm above the danger line.  As a result, five upazilas of Lalmonirhat district on the left bank were affected by floods.

However, when the water started receding in the morning and night, the flood situation improved in three upazilas, but hundreds of families were stuck in water in the remaining two upazilas.  The water development board said that the flood will improve in the entire district by evening if the flow of water upstream subsides.

It is known that most of the Sikkim region is submerged due to heavy rains in India where the Teesta River originates.  There were also massive casualties in India.

A dam in Sikkim broke under water pressure and flooded new areas.  The pressure falls on the downstream part of Bangladesh.  Excess water released by India’s Ghazaldoba dam hit Bangladesh’s Teesta barrage on Wednesday evening.  As a result, the water flow of Teesta River at Dalia Point increased.

The district administration has directed the people to be alert by miking in Teestapar due to the fear of major floods.  During the night, Teesta river flows 25 cm above the coast line.  Although the flood situation improved later, several families in Aditmari and Sadar upazilas remained under water until Thursday afternoon.  Flooding in the entire district may improve if water flows upstream are reduced.

Asfa Ud Daula, Executive Engineer of Teesta Barrage Dalia Branch, Water Development Board (PUBO), said that the Teesta River crossed the boundary line on Wednesday night due to the upstream wave, but it came down in the morning.  As a result, flooding has improved considerably.  Further improvements will be made in the afternoon.  An increase in water flow upstream may also increase downstream.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ullah said that there was no damage due to prior preparations.  He was trapped in water at night but was released in the morning.  Already, 800 packets of dry food have been distributed among water-stressed families.  Another 6,000 packets of dry food are in stock.  450 million tons of rice and 1.3 million cash are stored for any calamity.
