The cost of Aman farmers in Lalmonirhat has increased in the current season.  The farmers have been hit hard by the scorching heat with no rain and severe drought.  However, in 5 upazilas of the district, 86,650,000 hectares of land are being planted with Ropa Aman paddy.
It is known that Lalmonirhat district headquarters along with Aditamari, Kaliganj, Hatibandha and Patgram upazilas have not seen rain for about one and a half months.  Even though it rained occasionally, it could not wet the scorched earth.  Therefore, due to severe drought and lack of rain in the current season, farmers have been seen irrigating with diesel engines in different areas of the district.  Severe droughts and heatwaves can affect the production of various crops including rice, paddy and early winter vegetables.
Rosidul islam, a farmer in the municipal area of Sadar Upazila, said that due to less rain this year, we have to irrigate with diesel engines, which is increasing our expenses.  Ropa Aman paddy is planted in this season which is a profitable season for the farmer.  But if the market price of paddy is not good, we have to suffer losses.
Mojibor rahman of Mahendranagar Union of Sadar Upazila said that we are farmers due to which we are facing losses.  Due to severe drought and no rain this year, we are spending extra on irrigation and fertilizers.  Along with that, insect attacks on crops have increased.  Insects are not controlled even with frequent insecticide sprays.  Due to these reasons the farmers of the district are facing loss.
Sadar Upazila Kolaghat Union Ward No. 9 Paschim Hatura, farmer Samad Mondal said that when it rains, the paddy field is less fertile.  This year, due to excessive sun and heat, the water in the paddy field is drying up, as a result, additional irrigation has to be done.
Lalmonirhat Agriculture Officer Alinur Rahman said that in 5 upazilas of the district, 86 thousand 650 thousand hectares of land have been cultivated this year.
He also said, but this year due to severe drought and fire, the land has to be irrigated, which will increase the cost.  This monsoon was a profitable season for the farmers due to the rains in the Amon season.  However, severe drought will not cause any damage to rice, he said.
