Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Quader and District Detective Branch (DB) OC Firoz Hossain have been withdrawn in the incident of baton charge on BNP leaders and activists.
Meanwhile, a three-member investigation committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Lalmonirhat Police Superintendent Tariqul Islam confirmed this information on Wednesday (January 8) afternoon.
BNP leaders and activists said that on Tuesday evening, the Police Superintendent and two OCs were present at a cold storage invitation event in Mostafi area of ​​Sadar Upazila.
Awami League leader Akher Islam was present at the invitation. Three local BNP activists were taking pictures of the event on their mobile phones. At that time, the police detained them.
When the news spread outside, more than a hundred BNP leaders and activists immediately appeared in front of the cold storage.
 Police released three people detained during the protest by BNP leaders and activists. Later, BNP leaders and activists blocked the Rangpur-Kurigram highway demanding punishment for the police officers. On Tuesday, around 11 pm, additional police arrived in the Mostafi area and started lathicharge on the road blockers. At least 20 BNP leaders and activists were injured in this.
Raju Ahmed, Joint General Secretary of Gokunda Union BNP in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila, was injured in the lathicharge by the police. He said that at the scene, police members including two OCs lathicharged BNP leaders and activists for no reason. About 20 leaders and activists were injured in this. We demanded justice for the police officers sitting with the Awami League leader. That is why the police attacked us and lathicharged us.
Abdus Sattar, General Secretary of Lalmonirhat District Volunteer Party, said that preparations were underway for a protest program on Wednesday afternoon in this incident, but it was canceled after the two OCs were withdrawn. Exemplary punishment must be ensured for the two accused OCs.
The withdrawn Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station OC Abdul Kader said, SP Sir was also present at the event. Those who took pictures of us eating and drinking were drug dealers. We arrested them. Later they were released. We lathicharged the road blockers. We did not lathicharge any BNP leaders and activists. We did not know Awami League leader Akher Islam. We were present at the event at the invitation of the owner of the cold storage.
Lalmonirhat Police Superintendent Md. Tariqul Islam said, for now, two OCs have been withdrawn and attached to the police line for negligence of duty. A three-member investigation committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Additional Superintendent of Police (A Circle) Fazlul Haque has been made the head of the investigation committee. An investigation report has been asked to be submitted within the next seven days. Further action will be taken in light of the investigation report.
