The Laksam Upazila administration has formed a 32-member committee to remove obstacles to restore navigability to the Laksam section of the Dakatia River.
The committee, formed on February 24, has started working from Friday, February 28. At one time, launches and sailing boats used to ply on the Dakatia River, but now even ordinary boats are not able to ply.
Laksam’s UNO Kausar Hamid has played a commendable role in removing obstacles to the flow of the river with the aim of restoring the Dakatia River to its former state.
The committee, led by Laksam Upazila Executive Officer Kausar Hamid, is conducting a campaign to clean the bottom of the Dakatia River in the Laksam Municipality part, Bakai South part, Mudafarganj South part and Gobindapur Union part to restore navigability. A permanent obstacle has arisen due to the embankment that was placed during the construction of bridges at various places on the Dakatia River and not being removed later.
In addition, fishing with basal nets using bamboo fences in various places has also created obstacles in the flow of water. Due to the lack of free flow of water in the Dakatia River, aquatic animals, agriculture and the environment are facing threats. The Laksam Upazila administration has taken such initiatives to save the Dakatia River from this threat.
Laksam Upazila Executive Officer Md. Kausar Hamid said, “The Dakatia River has now turned into a canal, pond, and drain. Work is underway to transform the Dakatia River into an attractive river.”
As part of the clean-up drive, we first removed various types of obstructions to the flow of water from Dakatiya, including scum, snares, and other objects from the river. As a result, the flow of water has increased. This work cannot be completed in a day. It is a long-term task and all kinds of work will continue to restore the navigability of the Dakatiya River.
There are permanent obstacles in many places on the Dakatia River. He said that large equipment, including excavators, will be needed to remove them.
