Juba League attack on A-League candidate’s rally in Tangail; storm of condemnation

 Awami League candidate for Tangail-6 (Nagarpur-Delduar) constituency and District Awami League vice-president Tarek Shams Khan Himu’s public meeting has been attacked. There has been a storm of extreme condemnation and protest among the locals in this incident. Also in Tangail and Delduar-Nagarpur there is a storm of discussion and criticism between Awami League leaders and activists and political analysts.

Eyewitnesses said that on Friday afternoon, the local Awami League leaders and activists of Elasin Union of Delduar Upazila organized an Eid reunion program at Sinharagi Munsipara Jame Masjid premises. The meeting was chaired by local Mortuz Ali Khan and the joint general secretary of Nagarpur Awami League Syed Nazmul Haque Tapan was speaking at the meeting. During the speech, under the leadership of Elasin Union Jubo League President Anisur Rahman, 10/12 people including Rifat, Kamrul came to the stage and targeted Nazmul Haque Tapan’s head with a plastic chair in a terrorist manner. When the local people resisted them, they left the venue.

Sufferer Nagarpur Upazila Awami League Joint General Secretary Syed Nazmul Haque Tapan said that in the last parliamentary elections, Nagarpur Upazila Awami League unitedly elected MP Mahday and won with a huge margin of votes. After winning the election, MP Mahday started a friendly relationship with the Awami League. First, he opposed the strategy of A-League candidate Kudrat-e-Elahi in the upazila elections and defeated him.

He said that he secretly supported BNP candidate in UP elections. In addition, the former president of the upazila Awami League, Dr. Abdul Hai’s house was attacked and beaten up by his son Khalid Hasan and brother Manik. Pacutia Union Awami League member Obaidur Rahman, Upazila Awami League Forest and Environment Secretary Kahinur Mia physically abused numerous leaders and activists. I just protest his brutal torture.

He also said that during the public meeting of my leader, Tarek Sams Khan Himu, the local MP’s forces mentioned the names of those who confessed to the torture, and ten-twelve youths including Elasin Awami Jubo League President Bhumidsu Anisur hit me on the head with a chair and threw water bottles. I hit the chair and hurt my hand. When the journalists recorded the video during the attack, the journalist’s camera was taken away. I demand an organizational trial of this incident.

Elasin Union Jubo League President Anisur Rahman said that we went to listen to the complaint. A speaker was giving a speech criticizing the local MP. I just forbade him to make such a statement. He denied the allegation of assault.

Tangail-6 (Nagarpur-Delduar) Constituency Awami League candidate Tarek Shams Khan Himu said that the attack was carried out with the intention of holding my public meeting at the behest of an invisible person. Attacks were carried out to disrupt my election rally in Itopur too. He also said that I will complain by talking to the central leaders and district leaders. You can’t keep me and my staff under attack. He demanded exemplary punishment to find out who is behind this attack.

In this regard, General Secretary of Delduar Upazila Awami League M Shibli Sadiq said that the incident is very sad and shameful. He also said that he will recommend to the district Awami Jubo League that union Jubo League leader Anisur Rahman be relieved from his duties.

Delduar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nashir Uddin Mridha said that he heard about the attack on Awami League candidate Tarek Shams Himu’s Eid reunion meeting. Police were dispatched to the scene. If written complaint is received, legal action will be taken for investigation.

In this incident, MP of Tangail-6 (Nagarpur-Delduar) Constituency Khandkar Ahsanul Islam Titu said that yesterday’s incident was discussed with the ward and union leaders of Awami League, there was no party function that day. When someone went to a private function and made ugly statements against the government and public representatives, the local Jubo League resisted it.
