Former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has been arrested by the Punjab Police. After being convicted in the Tosakhana case, he was arrested from his residence in Zaman Park, Lahore. On Saturday (August 5), Pakistani media Geo News and Dawn reported this information.
The Punjab branch of PTI tweeted confirming the arrest of Imran Khan. The tweet said, Imran Khan is being taken to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
According to a Geo News report, earlier on Saturday, the Sessions Judge rejected Imran Khan’s bail plea. Additionally, Additional and Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar sentenced the PTI Chairman to three years imprisonment in the Toshakhana case.
In his judgement, Judge Dilawar noted that allegations of misrepresentation of assets against the PTI chairman have been proved. He was convicted in a corruption case. The PTI chief has been sentenced to three years in prison under Section 174 of the Election Act. A fine of Rs.1 lakh has also been imposed.
It is learned that before the hearing, numerous members of the security forces were deployed in the court premises. It is also known that no one was allowed to enter the court except for lawyers. However, neither Imran Khan nor his lawyer were present when the verdict was announced.
Earlier, on May 9, the PTI chief was arrested by Pakistani Rangers from outside the Islamabad High Court when he went to appear in court in the Al-Qadir Trust case. The whole of Pakistan became agitated in protest. He was released after two days.
