In Taltoli, Barguna, Channel S’s upazila correspondent and Television Forum president Faisal Sikder has been accused in a conspiracy murder case. After the brutal attack on Daily Naya Diganta’s upazila correspondent and Taltoli Press Club member Md. Yusuf Ali, a human chain and protest rally were held to protest the harassment with a conspiracy and false case.
The human chain and protest program was held on Sadar Road of the upazila at around 11 am on Saturday (February 8). Leaders from Taltoli Press Club, Television Journalist Forum, Taltoli Journalist Forum, Upazila Press Club, Reporters Unity, Journalist Union, Journalist Unity Alliance, and Mofusal Journalist Karame were present at the human chain.
The human chain was presided over by Taltoli Press Club Vice President Mongchin Than, and was addressed by Taltoli Television Forum General Secretary Jalil Ahmed, Upazila Press Club President Shahadat Hossain, Taltoli Journalist Forum President Hairaj Majhi, Taltoli Press Club’s former General Secretary Muha: Abubakar Siddique, journalist Faisal Sikder’s mother Halima Begum, wife Shahanaz Begum, sister Sohagi Akhter Marufa, and others.
The speakers in the human chain said that Arafat Khan was hacked to death in the Kachupatra Bazar of the upazila on Saturday, February 1 at around 8 pm. Journalist Faisal Sikder has been accused of conspiracy in this murder and on Friday, January 31, three journalists including journalist Yusuf Ali went to Angar Para village of Shalikkhali union of the upazila to collect news of forcible land grabbing. At that time, a group led by land grabber A. Sattar brutally attacked the journalists in front of the police. Later, false extortion cases were filed against the journalists. We strongly condemn and protest this. At the same time, the speakers demanded that journalists be exempted from these harassment cases. In addition, attacks on journalists are going on in different parts of the country and harassment cases are being filed. They are trying to silence the voices of journalists with these false harassment cases. If they are not exempted from these cases as soon as possible, a larger movement will be launched across the country.
