Md. Zillur Rahman Jewel: The Char Bangal of Patuakhali’s Galachipa Char Biswas. A human chain and a memorandum were presented to demand land settlement for 365 helpless families living there since 1994. The hour-long human chain was held in front of the Upazila Land Office on Sunday afternoon under the leadership of Maulana Mohammad Abdur Rab with the participation of hundreds of women and men. Later, a memorandum was presented to the Galachipa Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Upazila Nirbahi Officer.
At that time, the speakers said that they have been living in Charbangla since 1994. But some influential, wealthy land robbers created a new map in exchange for money and recorded the land in their names through settlement. By doing this, they are trying to evict 365 helpless families who have been living there for a long time. Therefore, the government authorities investigated the matter on the spot, took the matter into consideration, canceled their settlement and gave settlement in the names of their helpless families. If their demands were not met, they declared that they would sacrifice their lives through a hunger strike in front of the Upazila Parishad office by wearing a shroud.
The human chain and memorial were presented by Maulana Abu Bakar Siddique, President of the Galachipa branch of the Islamic Movement Bangladesh, General Secretary Maulana Abdul Mannan, President of Char Biswas Union Maulana Zakir Hossain, landless farmer Maulana Abdur Rab of the Char Bangla area, landless Md. Shahbuddin Shah, etc.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Nasim Rezo told the media that in the Charbangla area, for the past 20 to 25 years, we have received complaints of irregularities in the land settlement of the landless in several char areas of the upazila for various reasons. The land office is investigating this matter. We hope that the fair claims and rights of the landless will be restored very soon through legal processes.
