Gopal Karmakar, the owner of Supti Jewellers, was again attacked by miscreants in Rajapur Upazila of Jhalakathi. The miscreants attacked Gopal’s motorcycle with sharp country-made weapons. The incident took place at around 8:30 pm on Saturday in the Kamar Patti area of the Dakshin Matha market. His brother-in-law Ratan Karmakar, who was with him, was seriously injured by a sharp object and has sharp object marks on various parts of his body.
The victim, Gopal Karmakar, said that around 8:30 pm, after closing the shop and taking necessary items including money and jewelry as usual, the two of them were going home on a motorcycle with a relative named Ratan. On the way, when they came to Kamar Patti in the Dakshin Matha area of Sadar Bazar, some youths wearing helmets and black jackets stopped a motorcycle in the middle of the road and stopped it from moving. They were hit indiscriminately with sharp weapons wrapped in paper, causing them to fall off the motorcycle and sustain injuries.
When the people around heard their cries and started coming forward, the miscreants fired a few rounds of blank fire and snatched the two bags they were carrying. But as the people came forward quickly, they could not take the money and gold-filled bag in their pockets. Seeing the situation from the roof of a nearby building, a person named Pakhi threw a flower pot at the miscreants, after which the miscreants fled in two directions on two motorcycles.
Sanjay Karmakar, president of the upazila branch of the Bangladesh Jewelers Association, said that Gopal had been attacked once before. There is panic among the gold traders of the upazila after such an incident in the city last night. He demanded that the shooters be brought to justice immediately.
Rajapur Police Station OC Ismail Hossain said that the police visited the spot at night and collected CCTV footage of the speeding motorcycle. Efforts are underway to identify those involved. In addition to taking legal action in the incident, police activities are being intensified to maintain law and order in the area.
