 Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sh M Rezaul Karim has commented that global coordination is very important to deal with any epidemic in the future, including the implementation of One Health. The minister made this comment while delivering the president’s speech at the opening ceremony of the 11th One Health Bangladesh Conference 2023 at a hotel in the capital on Monday (June 12) afternoon. At that time, the minister said, the whole world is now a global village. Development is not possible leaving behind even one person in the world. So everyone has to work together. Covid-19 proved how unprepared the world was to deal with the situation. No one knew how to prevent covid. But man with his ability, with his intelligence, developed vaccines, developed immune systems. But this is not the end. No one can say for sure if something more dangerous than covid will come tomorrow or some other epidemic will come or not. That is why the people who are living on earth, have to prepare for them. For this a strong global platform has to be created. Where world wise people can contribute. In this case, Bangladesh will do the creativity and research required for the welfare of humanity. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is always ready to provide all kinds of cooperation on behalf of the Bangladesh government. He added, One Health has become a very necessary concept globally. We have identified the need for One Health, especially during the Corona crisis. Therefore, the 11th One Health Bangladesh Conference is very important for all of us. About 70 percent of the world’s infectious diseases originate from animals and have a history of creating outbreaks in humans. Keeping this in mind, it is the need of the hour to develop a robust surveillance system to detect, prevent and respond to disease outbreaks in livestock. There is no alternative for the concerned ministries and institutions to work together to prevent the spread of disease from animals to humans. He also said that Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Directorate of Fisheries, Directorate of Livestock are working tirelessly at the field level regarding One Health. Programs are being implemented to improve animal disease prevention, detection and response capacity. One of which is creation of Bangladesh Animal Health Intelligence System for animal disease diagnosis, real-time data collection, analysis and reporting. He treats diseases, animal treatment methods, medicines are very important for One Health. Animal diseases pose a threat to human health. Therefore animal welfare also plays a role in protecting human health. Keeping these issues in mind, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has launched a mobile veterinary clinic for emergency veterinary treatment. Through this the animal is not reaching the doctor but the doctor’s sick animal immediately. It is playing a very effective role at the field level in animal health protection. The minister said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina considers the matter of One Health very important. In 2016, the Government of Bangladesh formed an inter-ministerial committee on One Health and established the One Health Secretariat. We need to strengthen the One Health Secretariat. It needs to be established as a One Health information sharing and coordination hub, which covers animal, human and environmental issues. It is possible to be better prepared for any health emergency that may arise.
