News Desk: If the Shawwal moon is sighted today, the holy Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated tomorrow, Monday. People from different walks of life are returning home at the last minute to celebrate Eid with their loved ones. Various road junctions in densely populated Gazipur are now largely empty. There is no familiar hustle and bustle in the busiest places.
The Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways in Gazipur have been almost devoid of vehicles since Sunday (March 30) morning. Earlier, on Saturday (March 29) night, there was a heavy pressure of vehicles on the highway, but there was no traffic jam to mention. There were long queues of vehicles at the Chandra and Gazipur intersections.
It was learned from talking to the highway police and locals that all the factories in Gazipur had closed by Saturday afternoon. However, this time, as the factories were closed in phases, the pressure on the highway has reduced. In addition, as most factories are closed for 10 days, the workers have gradually returned home.
The Highway Police said that a large number of people left for their homes on Saturday night as the Eid-ul-Fitr moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries. This resulted in heavy traffic at midnight on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Tongi Station Road, College Gate, Cheraga Ali, Board Bazaar, and intersections. On the other hand, there was heavy traffic from Safipur Bazaar on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway to Gorai in Tangail via Chandra and up to Chakraborty on the Nabinagar-Chandra Road. Passengers were stuck in traffic jams in the Chandra area for a long time. However, the highway has been empty since Sehri.
It is learned that small traders, grocery shopkeepers, and rickshaw pullers are returning home at the last minute. Basically, most of the businesses in Gazipur revolve around garment factory workers. Since the workers left home last night, all these traders and rickshaw pullers have been on their way home since morning.
Earlier, the joy of returning home during the Eid holidays was accompanied by the suffering of traffic jams. This time, the picture was different for them. There was no long traffic jams and suffering like every time. They laughed and played happily on the way to the village. Usually, when the factories are closed, long traffic jams are created on the two highways of Gazipur before Eid. They had to sit for hours. People who were heading home used to take 10 hours to travel a three-hour road. However, this time, the picture is completely opposite. Working people living in the city got the experience of returning home on Eid like normal times.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naojor Highway Police Station Raish Uddin said that there was a lot of pressure on the highway since Saturday evening, but it started to normalize after midnight. The highway has been practically empty since morning. Even then, the police are working on the road.
