Former proctor of Rokeya University, Shariful Islam, who was named in the police shooting case of Shaheed Abu Sayeed during the anti-discrimination movement, has been arrested. On Monday (November 18) night, the PBI police called him for questioning and after the questioning, he was shown arrested. Rangpur PBI Police Superintendent ABM Zakir Hossain confirmed the arrest to the media. He said that former proctor of the university, Shariful Islam, one of the accused in the murder case of Abu Sayeed, who was shot dead by police at the gate of Begum Rokeya University on July 16, has been arrested. He is accused of giving instructions to the police to shoot while present at the scene. Earlier, ASI Amir Ali of the Metropolitan Police and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy were arrested in this case.
Incidentally, there were massive clashes in Rangpur during the anti-discrimination student movement on July 16. At that time, several teachers, officials, employees and activists of the Begum Rokeya University branch participated alongside the police in suppressing the movement of students including Abu Sayeed in front of the gate of Begum Rokeya University. The Chhatra League activists wore helmets and attacked the students with local weapons along with the police. Several teachers, officials and employees threw stones at the students and gave instructions to the police.
